Gear check: a closer look at Tadej Pogačar’s Tour de France-winning bike and equipment

29th Jun 2020

No, he’s not superhuman — he’s just on a Colnago. Here's the equipment that carried the young Slovenian to victory.

As a notorious American cyclist once said, “It’s not about the bike.” While it’s hard to argue with the sentiment — after all, it’s the rider who wins the race, not the bike they’re on —  Tadej Pogačar’s recent triumph at the Tour de France was also noteworthy for being the first Tour won on a Colnago. And we’re not saying that Pogačar’s bike was the difference between the yellow jersey and second place, but, y’know…

The Colnago V3Rs that Pogačar rode to victory is a formidable machine, and is the lightest frame ever made by Colnago. Described by the company as a “do-it-all” bike, the V3Rs is not only lightweight but aerodynamic as well, and as proven by Pogačar’s recent jaunt around France, more than capable of tackling any terrain you throw at it.

Pogačar’s V3Rs was kitted out with Campagnolo’s Super Record EPS 12 Speed Groupset (with traditional rim brakes) and Bora WTO carbon wheels, marking the return of another heritage Italian cycling brand to the top step of cycling’s biggest stage. It’s a simple equation really: pair an Italian bike with Italian parts and wheels, and beautiful things happen.

Beyond Colnago and Campagnolo, Pogačar made use of a wide range of premium equipment from leading brands such as Met, Look, Deda Elementi and Elite to forge his path to victory.

So if you want to ride like a Tour de France winner — or at least feel like one! — we’ve compiled a complete list of bits and pieces below.

As for the watts… Well, we’re gonna have to leave that part up to you.
