A chill is in the air and that means it’s time to start thinking about wearing the right gear to keep you comfortable. I often see cyclists wearing a big bulky thick jacket over the top of their cycling jersey. Whilst they seem happy to start with, after a few kilometers they are a sweaty mess and midway in they are more cold due to sweat not wicking away. If there is one piece of advice I can give, it’s use layers!
Tips:
1. Avoid wearing the one big bulky “warm” jacket. Use layers, otherwise you will just sweat and end up being cold and damp.
2. Keep your extremities warm. Get a good pair of gloves, toe warmers and ear warming headband.
3. Invest in a good set of arm and (depending on where you live) leg warmers. Arm and leg warmers are easily removed during a ride if conditions change and are a must have for any cyclist. Look for the type that are tailored with elbow “pocket” and firm fitting. This prevents slipping down your arm as you ride.
4. Look for snug fitting clothing. The closer each garment is to your body the warmer you will be. Remember the goal is to wick sweat away from your body, to avoid getting cold.
5. Be seen. In winter, many of us ride in the dark. Look for something that either has reflective paneling or is bright in colour.
Whether you are ride daily, weekly or occasionally it is more comfortable and easier to embrace the winter with the right clothing. Make sure you get yourself layered up and enjoy your cycling this winter.
