The available amount of carbohydrates in the body is a key factor that determines performance during long periods of physical exercise lasting several hours. If no carbohydrates are consumed during prolonged exercise, muscle glycogen will be depleted in approximately 90 minutes, leading to fatigue. Athletes can consume drinks, energy bars, or gels to maintain their energy levels.
How Many Carbohydrates Should Be Taken During Exercise?
- Exercises <1h: No need to consume carbohydrates during exercise
- Exercises 1-2h: 30g of carbohydrates per hour

- Exercises >2.5-3h: Up to 90g of carbohydrates per hour
